There are some trips where you have a plan.
And then there are trips where you throw the van on the back, jump on a ferry and see what happens.
This was definitely the second one.
We hitched up one of our On The Move vans, waved goodbye to the mainland and set off for Tasmania — a place famous for rugged landscapes, incredible food, winding roads and more hidden gems than you can poke a stick at.
The mission? Explore as much as possible, find some epic spots to camp, and show you what travelling Tasmania in an On The Move is really like.
After arriving in Devonport, we headed inland towards Mole Creek to meet up with our mates from Off Grid Caravans, who were ready to show us some of their favourite local spots.
And what better way to start than getting up close with some of Tasmania’s locals?
At Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary, we met some pretty unique characters — including wombats, kangaroos and Tasmania’s famous devils. It was the perfect introduction to the island and a great reminder that Tassie’s wildlife is just as impressive as its scenery.
After a day of exploring, it was time for the important stuff: good food, a campfire and a night under the stars.
Because no caravan adventure is complete without sitting around a fire telling stories (and probably eating more marshmallows than planned).
The next morning started the only acceptable way when camping in the cold — with a hot coffee.
Luckily, the On The Move has us covered.
Fueled up and ready to go, we headed underground to explore Marakoopa Cave, where we swapped chilly mornings for a surprisingly warm nine degrees below the surface.
The cave was massive, impressive and definitely worth adding to your Tassie itinerary.
Then it was back on the road, chasing waterfalls, winding through rainforest and finding those moments where you look around and think:
“Yep… this is why we do this.”
One of the best things about travelling with a caravan is that you don’t always have to stick to the plan.
Sometimes the best adventures happen when you take the scenic route.
From discovering the story behind Sheffield’s famous murals, chatting with locals, finding quirky stops in small towns and stumbling across places we never knew existed — Tasmania kept delivering surprises around every corner.
And let’s be honest… finding a bakery in a small Tassie town is basically part of the itinerary.
Of course, we couldn’t visit Tasmania without finding a few places to let the On The Move stretch its legs.
From bush camps to beach adventures, the van handled everything Tassie threw at us — giving us the freedom to explore further, stay longer and enjoy the journey along the way.
Stanley was a standout, with coastal views, fresh seafood, penguin spotting and the perfect backdrop of the iconic Nut.
And yes… we may have had a little fun putting the van on the sand too.
Because what’s the point of having an adventure-ready caravan if you don’t take it on an adventure?
Photos can show you the views, but they don’t show the laughs, the unexpected stops, the local stories or the moments that make a trip unforgettable.
So we filmed the whole adventure.
From ferry crossings and campfires to waterfalls, beaches and everything in between — this is Tasmania the way we love to travel.
