Christmas hits differently on a caravan road trip — gum trees, roos, and then suddenly a whole town glowing with Christmas lights like it’s auditioning for the North Pole.

There’s tinsel on verandas, fairy lights on fences and at least one very committed dad zip-tying a glowing reindeer to his roof.

So let’s do Christmas properly, caravan style. Here’s a trail of the most joyful, over-the-top, wonderfully festive light displays around Australia to roll into this December.

RADIANCE – ROCKHAMPTON (QLD)

WHEN: 28 Nov – 24 Dec

WHERE: Botanic Gardens 

Rockhampton doesn’t do Christmas halfway — it goes full cinematic. Radiance transforms the Botanic Gardens into a glowing, pulsing, immersive light wonderland that would make even Santa drop his milk and cookies.

For over 30 years, the Riverland town of Loxton has embraced Christmas like no other. The community comes together to create over 350 hand-painted Christmas scenes, with large clusters of residential streets and a dazzling main street called East Terrace.

This is the Disneyland of Christmas lights. Giant trees, glowing tunnels, illuminated animals, themed zones… It’s whimsical, immersive, and absolutely made for families, couples and anyone with a pulse.

WHEN: 6–24 Dec

WHERE: Queens Park Botanic Gardens 

This is Christmas with heart. Toowoomba’s Botanic Gardens turn into a joyful mix of lights, music, raffles, BBQs, entertainers and local performers. It’s wholesome in the best possible way — the kind of event that makes you feel like a kid again.

One of Australia’s oldest and most iconic community light festivals — 60 years of locals decorating their homes, businesses, laneways and gardens with the kind of dedication that makes your own tangled box of fairy lights look embarrassing.

DARWIN WATERFRONT CHRISTMAS TRAIL (NT)

WHEN: 29 November – 4 January  

WHERE: Darwin Waterfront 

Darwin goes tropical for Christmas with a brand-new large-scale Waterfront Light Trail. The trail brings out enormous glowing sculptures you didn’t know you needed — including a giant octopus. 

Expect:

  • A full 1km illuminated trail
  • 11 huge displays including Santa, a lighthouse and that glorious octopus
  • Live performers and roving entertainment

GEELONG CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS (VIC)

WHEN: Mid-Nov – Jan

WHERE: Adventure Park 

The Geelong Christmas Festival of Lights is a huge, glowing, 2.5km trail packed with 3.3 million lights and more than 1,000 installations. Animals, toys, fairy-tale scenes, immersive tunnels — it’s basically Christmas turned up to 100.

RIO TINTO CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TRAIL, PERTH (WA)

WHERE: Perth CBD 

The city turns into a festive treasure hunt, with 22 installations spread across malls, parks and laneways — plus projections, roving acts and special event nights.

Expect:

  • “Merry Mile” family-friendly walking route
  • Animated light shows

MANDURAH CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TRAIL

WHEN: 28 Nov – 4 Jan

WHERE: Mandurah  

Coastal Christmas at its finest. Mandurah glows from the city centre to the Ocean Marina, with events sprinkled through December. The event starts on 28 Nov 2025 and runs until 4 Jan 2026. In addition to the Christmas Lights Trail, the family-friendly events across the city include a Christmas pageant, Carols in the Park with Conrad Sewell and New Year’s Eve fireworks.
